We’re to week 3!
This week we’re completing 1/4 of our blocks! I thought this week I’d talk about something I really didn’t love...trimming half-square triangles (HSTs). I figured out a few tricks to make it a little quicker. The video will take you right through it! But if you’d rather read on, great! I’ve linked my favorite things.
Oh...and don’t forget about the extra “Warm & Cozy Challenge.” If you’d like, message a friend you haven’t talked with in a while. You new know when you might reach out to someone just when they need it.
When I’m marking HSTs, I use a Clover Hera Marker to make that nice line from corner to corner. Plus, the indentation will usually show through four layers of fabric. Pretty sweet, and will save you time and supplies.
To separate HSTs, I batch them up. I separate the squares into groups of three, which is just long enough to cut through with a long ruler.
Line up the middle section between the sewing lines and place your ruler on top. Be careful to keep the ruler still throughout. Cut between the seams to form two chains of three pretty triangles.
Here’s the part that just might change your life. I use the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmer by New Leaf Stitches trim up 6 at a time. Trim them all in place as shown below, then pick up the freshly trimmed triangles. Then, wipe away all the trimmings at once! And you don’t need to rotate anything! Press them to the dark side.
And there’s a pretty stack of HSTs! Feel free to make up 1/4 of your blocks this week, but if you’d like a simple way to chain piece then all up, stay tuned next week! I’m loving seeing all the beautiful quilts you’re making!
